Position Summary:

At Facebook, we have a responsibility to everyone who uses our services to amplify the good and mitigate the harm – to make sure that people are safe on Facebook, and their information is protected. Many of these questions aren’t new, but new products and technologies raise new issues that Facebook takes very seriously.

You’ll serve as a subject matter expert and resource for teams across the company in areas of civil rights and advise Facebook teams working on new technologies.

Duties and Responsibilities:

-Collaborate with internal policy, product and legal teams on civil rights laws and how they intersect with company policies and practices
-Partner with the Content Policy team during policy development phase
-Partner with the Policy team in external engagements on company policies/practices that have civil rights implications
-Partner with Legal Team when questions arise related to civil rights
-Serve as a subject matter expert and resource for teams across the company, including Policy, Legal and Privacy organization
-Lead development of training and educational resources focused on civil rights laws
-Collaborate with a subset of Legal, Policy, and Product teams to provide guidance and inputs to help identify/issue-spot potential civil rights implications with company products
-Develop systems, processes or other measures to improve the company’s ability to issue spot and address potential civil rights implications in products and policies before they launch
-Work in tandem with subject matter experts such as HR, Security & Safety to provide subject matter expertise on various policy priorities/policies
-Partner with External Affairs on engagement with external stakeholders and the civil rights community
-Stay up-to-date on relevant and arising civil rights and policy issues affecting Facebook and build proactive strategies
-Engage and work closely with external civil rights organizations and agencies as a representative of Facebook
-Communicate publicly on civil rights issues facing Facebook and the technology community as a whole
-Identify proactive civil rights priorities for the company and guide the implementation of those priorities
-Provide civil rights risks and concerns in interactions with leadership, executives, and the Task Force

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
-J.D. (or foreign equivalent) with membership in at least one U.S. state bar
-15+ years of legal experience with significant experience in policy, including civil rights issues
-Communication experience, particularly in the areas of consensus-building and public presentation
-Experience operating independently and executing flawlessly on both the strategic and operational level

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
-Experience working with and advising technical product teams
-Experience representing companies externally and internally at the executive level
