About the Student Union Assembly:
The Student Union Assembly (SUA) is the official undergraduate student government at UCSC. The organization
represents over 17,000 undergraduate students on the administrative, local, state, and federal level. Founded in 1985 to
establish the Banana Slug as our official mascot, the SUA has been dedicated to serving the student body. The SUA is
also the official voice of undergraduate students on campus-wide and system-wide committees. The SUA promotes
activism, civic participation, discussion, and awareness of public issues from a variety of perspectives and viewpoints.
Under the general supervision of the Associate Vice Chancellor/Dean of Students, the Student Legal Services Advisor will use professional concepts to provide legal advice to UCSC students through the Student Union Assembly’s housing legal assistance program. This position requires broad knowledge of legal issues in the housing arena with a focus on landlord/tenant law and housing discrimination issues. The Student Legal Services Advisor will exercise independent judgment while working on complex issues where analysis of situations or data is required. Provides guidance and supervision to student intern personnel. This is a 50% Contract position for two years. The position is funded by UC Office of the President through the Housing Assistance Program
Characteristics of the Successful Candidate:
Successful candidates are those who seek a dynamic work environment where learning will occur every day. Successful candidates will possess a JD or other law degree from a State Bar-accredited or American Bar Association-approved law school and possess extensive experience as a legal adviser and/or practicing attorney, demonstrating applied skills in landlord/tenant practice. Successful candidates will demonstrate the ability to work in a highly collaborative manner with a diverse client group, with a high level of cultural fluency and a demonstrated knowledge of and commitment to working through issues related to diversity, equity, inclusion, and the multiple, intersecting identities. Successful candidates will demonstrate experience in conflict resolution, team building, consensus building, and/or restorative justice practices.
