Zendesk is looking for a Senior Counsel, Litigation – a litigation expert who will have responsibility for managing Zendesk’s global litigation portfolio. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to manage existing and new litigation, partner internally to further build Zendesk’s litigation practices, and own Zendesk’s legal order response processes and policies, while delivering practical advice to time-sensitive litigation related questions and practices.

This role reports to Zendesk’s Associate General Counsel who leads the legal team’s litigation, employment, and intellectual property functions.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Oversee Zendesk’s global litigations, litigation policies, and litigation strategy
  • Manage all aspects of existing and new litigation and adversarial matters, including settlement strategy, managing US and global external counsel, implementing effective legal holds, coordinating and conducting internal discovery, managing productions, drafting and reviewing documentation, and resolving matters in an effective and efficient manner
  • Manage non-litigation and pre-litigation enforcement matters, disputes, settlements, and occasional collections matters, with an emphasis on providing practical solutions closely tied to business goals
  • Manage Zendesk’s responses to legal orders, including preservation requests, court orders, subpoenas, warrants, and civil investigative demands
  • Develop, maintain, and refine Zendesk’s litigation management policies and practices, including legal holds, discovery management, data retention, and privilege
  • Educate members of internal partner teams regarding litigation matters, policies, best practices, and prevention
  • Stay apprised of developing litigation trends and influence business to respond and prepare for emerging developments
  • Partner and develop effective relationships with key stakeholders across the business, including business owners, security, IT, and functional experts within the legal team
Skills and Competencies
  • 8+ years’ substantive litigation experience, preferably both at a law firm and in house
  • J.D. at an accredited law school and admission to the bar
  • Expertise and agility to manage litigation in a variety of substantive areas of law for technology companies
  • Experience or interest in managing litigation on a global scale
  • Expertise managing internal discovery, with an understanding of practical approaches to ediscovery
  • Experience interpreting and responding to legal orders
  • Influential and collaborative partner, with an ability to develop relationships at all levels of the business
  • Mentality that no task is too big or too small
  • Problem solver with a focus on practical solutions and guidance
  • Accountable and hands-on, self-starter, results-oriented
  • Able to manage multiple high-priority projects simultaneously
