Position Summary:

As Senior Corporate Counsel, you will play an important role in enabling Autodesk’s future success as a legal business partner to the Autodesk Research organization. Reporting to the Director and Senior Intellectual Property Counsel and collaborating closely with your legal and business colleagues, you will provide key legal support for Autodesk scientists, engineers and strategists in their collaborations with lighthouse customers, industry partners, government and academia.

Responsibilities:

  • Develop a deep understanding of Autodesk’s business, technology and research strategy
  • Advise and support the Autodesk Research organization on legal matters generally
  • Partner with members of the Autodesk Research organization to assist in defining strategy for engagements with academia, lighthouse customers and industry partner and for government-sponsored research opportunities
  • Draft and negotiate a variety of strategic research & development agreements (including collaboration, sponsored research, fellowship, consortia and government research agreements)
  • Define and draft playbooks, templates and other legal support assets for Legal and business colleagues on a variety of legal topics related to research & development, including confidentiality, publication, negotiation and research & development collaborations with lighthouse customers, industry partners, academia and government
  • Advise Legal department colleagues on best practices for structuring and negotiation of strategic research & development agreements (including collaboration, sponsored research, consortia and government research agreements)
  • Work closely with the Autodesk Intellectual Property team to ensure that agreements with lighthouse customers, industry partners, government and academia support Autodesk’s intellectual property strategy
  • Collaborate with Legal team colleagues to manage legal risks relating to strategic research & development across a variety of legal domains
  • Create, enhance and continuously improve internal training programs to build general awareness of legal issues related to research & development collaborations with lighthouse customers, industry partner, academia and government and to drive best practices
  • Exercise excellent legal judgment and extraordinary communication skills to provide practical, clear, and concise counsel

 

Minimum Qualifications:

  • JD degree from an ABA-accredited law school; member in good standing of at least one state bar
  • 5-7 years of experience (with at least 2 years at a law firm) (1) drafting and negotiating research & development agreements, including collaboration, sponsored research, fellowship, consortia and/or government research agreements and (2) creating templates and playbooks for the same
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Demonstrated business acumen: You see the “big picture” as well as the relationship of very detailed and specific legal and business issues
  • You are tech-savvy, with the curiosity to learn about Autodesk’s research objectives
  • You like to enable your business colleagues by creating playbooks and other assets to help your business colleagues navigate the Legal process and understand risks and legal issues relevant to research and development activities
  • You are a self-starter and can make decisions quickly, but also seek guidance when appropriate
  • You are intellectually curious and love learning something new every day

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Prior experience working as in-house counsel at a technology company to support a research & development or science team
  • Prior experience drafting and negotiating a variety of agreements between government and the private sector and academia and the private sector
  • Demonstrated experience with intellectual property issues that arise in complex collaborative research engagements
  • Superior presentation skills and a passion for teaching others about legal issues relevant to research & development engagements
