LA Family Housing is seeking a proactive, strategic, and collaborative General Counsel (GC) to advise the organization on a wide range of legal, operational, contractual, and compliance issues. The General Counsel will have the unique opportunity to serve the greater Los Angeles community and help realize the mission of LA Family Housing. The GC will join the executive leadership team of LA Family Housing, known as an innovative provider of solutions and services to ameliorate the current homelessness crisis while also addressing the root causes of homelessness.The General Counsel reports directly to the President and CEO and provides expert and strategic legal advice on a wide range of legal, operational, and compliance issues. The GC is responsible for managing the legal affairs of LA Family Housing (often in coordination with the Human Resources department) as well as LAFH’s risk management activities and the agency’s insurance portfolio.
Candidates must have a Juris Doctorate (J.D). degree from an accredited law school with a current and maintained license to practice law in the State of California. LA Family Housing is also seeking a minimum of five years in managing the legal affairs of a substantial organization; 10+ years of experience highly desired.The strongest candidates will have experience in strategic planning and possess overall broad legal knowledge and/or familiarity (corporate law, litigation, labor/employment law, etc.). Additionally, candidates should possess the following expertise, knowledge, and skills:
Strategic Counsel and Leadership
– Strong leadership and persuasion skills; demonstrates visionary leadership, imagination, creativity, insight and boldness
– Crafts and reviews legal strategy in response to any litigation coupled with the ability to make well-reasoned and strategic decisions
– Advises senior management with respect to the legal implications of all major decisions, strategies and transactions of the organization
– Implements and ensures achievement of designated aspects of the organization’s strategic plan, annual operating plan, and functional budget
Contract Review and Business Operations
– Reviews material contracts and agreements between the organization and its partners or employees or any third party
– Experience in and knowledge of Contract Administration, Operations Management, Internet Technology, and Human Resources
– Strong understanding of financials, including financial statements and budget development
– Serves as legal advisor on major business transactions as requested
– Maintains knowledge of organization’s operations and legal documents
– Ensures that the organization’s vision, mission, and values are fulfilled and actualized in its operations and services
Employment Law and Labor Relations
– Works closely with the Director of Human Resources and other leaders to ensure employment practices are in line with the organization’s desired culture, with a particular emphasis on diversity, equity, and inclusion and in compliance with all state and federal employment laws
– Assists with employee and legal issues as required
– Provides guidance on employment-related personnel matters including grievance procedures, terminations, etc.
Risk Management and Compliance
– Manages LA Family Housing’s Risk Mitigation 360 Plan and coordinates its implementation
– Staffs the Risk Management Committee of the Board of Directors
– Liaisons with the organization’s insurance broker to ensure that the organization has appropriate insurance coverage; administers and oversees the organization’s insurance portfolio and oversees insurance claims against the organization
Internal/External Communications and Relationship-Development
– Ability to adapt to a variety of personalities in order to manage up, down and laterally (both externally and internally); skills in diplomacy
– Retains and liaisons with outside counsel who possess special expertise, and supervises and assists outside counsel in litigation
– Proven general counseling experience in a business environment including interface with Board of Directors, Executive Staff, and Department Heads
– Commitment to the organization’s core values and objectives coupled with the ability to manage details
Compensation for this opportunity will begin at approximately $196,717. Additional benefits information to be shared further along in the process.

The salary listed on this job description is reflective of our compensation structure and is a firm amount. Future increases are performance-based.

Effective November 1, 2021, LA Family Housing will require proof of vaccination for all employees. This requirement is in response to the public health emergency and is intended to reduce the spread of COVID-19 among LA Family Housing employees, our stakeholders and those we serve – it will remain in effect for the duration of the public health emergency. Employees may apply for an exemption if they cannot be vaccinated due to complicating medical conditions or sincerely held religious beliefs. If the exemption is approved, then the employees will be subject to weekly COVID-19 testing.
