Position Summary:
The Office of the Public Defender offers opportunities for Deputy Public Defenders I, II, III & IV. These positions offer an exciting opportunity for a challenging career in criminal trial work. Incumbents represent indigent defendants and provide skilled legal counsel and courtroom advocacy at all critical phases of state-level criminal and civil commitment litigation.

Duties and Responsibilities:
Public Defenders conduct legal research, prepare and argue motions, writs, briefs and opinions; interview and counsel clients; participate in developing effective investigation plans for clients; negotiate with opposing counsel; and prepare and conduct trials.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
Deputy Public Defender I: Must have an active membership, in good standing, with the State Bar of California.
Note: Applicants awaiting results of the October 2020 California Bar Examination may apply. State Bar membership must be attained in order to be hired.
Deputy Public Defender II: Must have an active membership, in good standing, with the State Bar of California AND two (2) years of criminal trial experience as an attorney.
Deputy Public Defender III: Must have an active membership, in good standing, with the State Bar of California AND three (3) years of criminal trial experience as an attorney.
Deputy Public Defender IV: Must have an active membership, in good standing, with the State Bar of California AND five (5) years of criminal trial experience as an attorney.
