We’re seeking a motivated, conscientious attorney to provide cross-functional support to the Employment and Litigation functions of the Mattel Law Department. The position will support a wide range of business clients within Mattel while focusing on employment advice, ethics and compliance, employee training, internal investigations, and a broad array of civil litigation matters. The position is a Counsel role based in our Corporate Headquarters in El Segundo, California.
What Your Impact Will Be:
Assist in the provision of counseling and support to the Human Resources department on day-to-day employee relations matters and compliance, including: recruiting, hiring, and compensation; employee discipline, performance management, terminations, and restructurings; anti-discrimination, harassment prevention, and non-retaliation; affirmative action efforts and compliance; and federal and state wage-hour compliance.
Assist in the provision of advice and support to Mattel’s Human Resources’ Benefits group regarding leaves of absence and workplace accommodations management policy and practices, and Human Resources representatives regarding handling of individual cases.
Keep abreast of significant labor and employment decisions, legislation and regulatory rulings that may affect the Company’s business or policy.
Develop training materials and assist in providing training on employment law issues to management and Human Resources professionals.
Draft and revise offer letters, confidentiality agreements, separation agreements, and settlement agreements.
Conduct (or support Human Resources representatives in conducting) internal investigations of employee complaints of potential violations of Company policy.
Investigate and respond to state and federal employment administrative complaints, investigations, and audits.
Assist in handling (and supervising outside counsel as required) on pre-litigation claims, settlement negotiations, federal and state litigation.
Actively and strategically support management of civil litigation matters globally in a wide variety of practice areas, including products liability, trade secrets, idea theft, securities, contract, privacy, intellectual property, and more.
Partner with and advise in-house clients to reduce risk and avoid disputes.
Support management of outside counsel relationships, including staffing, case strategy, budgets, and more.
Support management of ADR proceedings and settlement negotiations.
Respond to third-party subpoenas and other similar requests/demands.
Manage the collection, review, and production of electronically stored information.
Ethics & Compliance
Support investigations of and responses to compliance issues raised by internal and external sources, including ethics line reports, including working with Human Resources, internal audit function, other Law Department sections, and affected business units.
Manage training program schedules, developing and selecting training modules, delivering training, working with other Mattel lawyers on training outside the U.S.
Assist in maintaining and updating Company Policies and other documentary guidance and communications to employees.
What We’re Looking For:
A minimum of 3+ years as an attorney with pertinent experience at a law firm or an in-house law department:
providing sophisticated legal advice, including experience with employment issues, corporate ethics and compliance programs, and employment and ethics investigations; and
handling a wide variety of litigation matters, at every stage of litigation (including dispositive motions, discovery, and trial).
A JD from a top law school and strong academic credentials
State bar qualification and good standing
Admission in California preferred
Ability to identify and analyze issues and evaluate their broader implications for the business; interact with clients at all levels; provide timely, practical legal advice and solutions; and communicate effectively in person and in writing.
Ability to work independently, make good judgments, and take ownership of issues and matters through to their successful conclusion.
Leadership and organization skills, including program management, planning, prioritization and time management.
Ability to work as part of the Law Department, working cooperatively with colleagues, maintaining a professional demeanor, in writing and in person, with management, other internal clients, support staff, outside counsel and other outside parties.
Demonstrated integrity and ability to foster a compliance culture.
Ability and willingness to develop expertise in other topics to meet needs of a dynamic business and Law Department.
