Duties and Responsibilities
The Santa Monica City Attorney’s Office provides advisory and other services to the City Council and City department heads and staff in matters such as: representing the City and its employees in civil proceedings; prosecuting state and local misdemeanors on behalf of the People of the State of California; drafting ordinances, resolutions, and motions; enforcing local and state laws that protect tenants and consumers; fulfilling civic responsibilities relating to governmental process, governmental ethics and elections; and assisting in the accomplishment of other tasks and goals set by the City Council.
Skills and Competencies
Exceptional leader and accomplished attorney who:
– Is a current member in good standing of the State Bar of California with a minimum of 10 years of broad legal practice experience including the representation of public entity clients in California in matters which may include litigation, real estate development, land use, housing, civil rights, labor relations, contracts, administrative law, criminal, and tort liability.
– Has superior academic credentials and excellent oral and written communication skills.
– Has extensive, proven management experience, including managing budgets and supervising other attorneys ina positive and fair working environment.
– Reflects the City’s progressive, cutting-edge posture by being a creative legal strategist with a problem-solving attitude.
– Has a history of functioning apolitically in a political environment, with the utmost integrity, remaining cool under fire, demonstrating the ability to work collaboratively on controversial subjects with individuals holding diverse viewpoints.
– Demonstrates a commitment to advancing racial and social justice.
Qualifications and Prior Experience
Must be a current member in good standing of the State Bar of California with a minimum of 10 years of broad legal practice experience including the representation of public entity clients in California in matters which may include litigation, real estate development, land use, housing, civil rights, labor relations, contracts, administrative law, criminal, and tort liability.

Proof of COVID 19 vaccination will be required as a condition of employment.
