Position Summary
The City Attorney is the Chief Legal Officer for the City and is appointed by the City Council. As a key member of the City Management Team, the City Attorney works collaboratively with the city organization in overseeing all city legal activities including civil and criminal litigation, and transactional advice and counsel.
Duties and Responsibilities
In providing the City legal services, the City Attorney’s Office advises the City Council and its boards and commissions; prepares and reviews ordinances, resolutions, contracts, and other legal documents; prosecutes violations of the Lodi Municipal Code; and represents the city in litigation. Among the key priorities for the office are issues and challenges involving homelessness, affordable housing, land use and planning, and economic development. While much of the role involves transactional activity, the City Attorney will also oversee litigation efforts that are handled both in-house and with contract counsel.
Skills and Competencies
The successful candidate will have a minimum of seven years’ experience in the active practice of law in the State of California including at least two of those years in a management, supervisory, or lead capacity. A Juris Doctorate degree from a law school accredited by the American Bar Association or the California Bar Association is required along with membership in good standing with the California State Bar Association. Any combination equivalent to experience and education that would likely provide the required knowledge, abilities, and skills will be qualifying.
